In a playing career that has spanned nearly 50 years, Dave has been a member of the Western Australian (WASO) and Sydney Symphony Orchestras (SSO), the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust (Sydney) Orchestra, the Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO), the Australian Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME), the latter three as Principal Double Bass, and several Freelance Orchestras (always as Principal). His non-classical work includes Jazz, Rock, Country Music, Cabaret and Experimental and Improvisatory Music. He is now a member of the contemporary Flamenco group, Arrebato Ensemble.
He has played the Sydney (and some national) seasons of many Music Theatre and Stage Productions and played on hundreds of Record Albums/CDs, Film Scores (composing the music for some), Television Shows and Jingles/Commercials.
He has performed in concert and cabaret with many artists including Peggy Lee, George Benson, Antony and the Johnsons, Eartha Kitt, Sir George Martin, Val Doonican, Tim Draxl, Julie Anthony, David Campbell and Monica Trapaga, jazz greats Milt Jackson, Phil Woods and Al Jareau and has been the Bassist for Maestro Tommy Tycho for the last 37 years.
In his other life Dave repairs, restores and sets up double basses and cellos in his home workshop (homebass).
Throughout his playing career, because of his versatility and love of music generally, he has been asked to perform in many different musical styles and genres. This, of course, means that he has to create different types of sound and tone with his bass to suit the musical style at hand. Not being a hoarder or collector of basses he makes it all happen on just one instrument. It's this understanding of musical requirements, and how to realize them, that has helped form his concepts of instrument set up for optimum sound.
Beautiful sound and the creation of it is at the heart of his musical sensibilities.
In yet another life he almost finds time to be a husband, father, cook, gardener, provider of taxi services and sharer of housework duties…..
